The co-founder of Patreon has done a few talks on what has generally happened at YouTube and across other social media platforms. He describes it as a mindless dopamine overload.

I think that they are killing off original creativity - as people rarely have ideas or express themselves anymore. Instead they wake up and think 'What can I do today that will please the algorithm.' The very idea that most content creators on YouTube advise spending more time working on the thumbnail than anything else just goes to show how badly YouTube have fucked things.
